Part 3 History of the Mundaring Arts Centre...

This year the Mundaring Arts Centre is celebrating 40 years. This week Lost Mundaring & Surroundings is discussing the appointment of the Mundaring first Community Arts Officer, events (such as the Hills Festival) and the commissioning of Sculpture Park.

Part 3 History of MAC...

The appointment of a Mundaring’s first Community Arts Officer through an Instant Lotteries grant in 1983 saw a significant expansion of the Arts Centres capabilities. Activities. Over the course of the next few years a variety of art classes, courses and workshops across a range of artistic fields were organised, enlisting the talents of local artists such as Joanna Capelle (painting), Despina Maiola (calligraphy), Alison Brown (ceramics), Nalda Searles (basketry), Gareth Morse (visual literacy), Judy Kotai (stained glass), John Witcombe (photography) and Susan Tingay (botanical illustration).

Other projects included a mural project on the wall of the Arts Centre by Nigel Hewitt with the help of students (last weeks photo from Part 2); the Marks for Mundaring banner project organised by Rod van der Merwe and the creation of a teenage theatre by Juliet Ludbrook.

Early exhibition programmes were also well received with concepts such as the self portrait show and the Shire Acquisition exhibition strongly identified as traditions well worth maintaining.

The various youth events developed by MAC together with projects such as their bus shelter initiative and the array of workshop activities also helped to raise the Arts Centre’s profile and reputation. These were further enhanced by the commissioning of the Sculpture Park in 1984 and events like the Hills Festival (established in 1988) which received very wide attention within and beyond the Shire.

Thank you to the Mundaring Arts Centre for supplying the great photos* and information!
